Mitsubishi Motors’ Hong Kong importer and distributor Universal Cars (UCL) started individual sales of the i-MiEV electric vehicle today (20 May).

Mass-production i-MiEVs have already been delivered to the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (HKSAR) and some companies.

However, today’s announcement marks the first time sales to individuals will start in Hong Kong and is also the first time the i-MiEV will be sold to individuals outside Japan.

MMC and UCL signed an EV memorandum of understanding with the HKSAR government in February, with the authority carrying out “practicality tests with a pre-production test model”.

Work has also been undertaken with electric power companies regarding EV charging infrastructure.

UCL has delivered about 30 i-MiEVs to the HKSAR government and other businesses since December 2009.

In Japan, MMC first sold the i-MiEV mainly to corporations and municipalities in fiscal year 2009, with sales of around 1,400 units. Last month, MMC expanded its sales to include those to individuals.

MMC plans to launch left-hand drive i-MiEVs in Europe from the end of this year. It is also building versions for PSA’s Peugeot and Citroen brands on an OEM basis.
