Johnson Electric International will this week open a new plant in Chennai, India, to increase production of automotive motors.

The additional leased 22,000 sq ft plant will initially employ 100 staff making motors for engine cooling fan modules and gear motors for window lifts. In response to demand, the company expects that the Chennai site will develop into a full range supplier of electric motors and motion subsystems to the local auto industry .


“Our company is committed to be the ‘safe choice’ for our customers worldwide, so establishing operations in India to support local customers is an important part of our strategy,” said chairman and CEO Patrick Wang.


“We look forward to being part of the fast paced automotive industry in India, and partnering with its technology leaders,” he added.


The Indian unit is part of Hong Kong based Johnson Electric Group which has 38,000 workers in 20 countries and other factories in China, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Hungary, USA, Brazil, and the UK.
