Honda Motor said it plans to build a THB1.7bn (US$47m) test track in Thailand to help strengthen in local R&D operations. It will be the company’s second such facility outside Japan, the other began operations in the USA in 1975.

The new track will be built in the Rojana Industrial Park in Prachin Buri province, near its second vehicle assembly plant due to completed next March after a year-long delay.

The test track is scheduled to be completed in 2017 and will be used to test regional and global models under a wide range of driving conditions.

Honda’s new THB17.2bn assembly plant will have an annual production capacity of 120,000 vehicles and will make sub-compact models such as the Jazz and City. 

The company is targeting a 3.3% rise in output to 110,000 units this year, driven mainly by a 38% rise in CBU exports to 72,700 units.
