India’s Ministry of the Environment has approved plans for Honda to expand its Tapukara car plant in Rajasthan.
Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL), which has seen its sales rising steadily, has for some time been eager to expand production capacity at Tapukara. HCIL’s sales were up by 21 per cent year-on-year to 55,647 units (45,880 in Q1 of fiscal 2016-2017) during the 1 April-31 July quarter of fiscal 2017-2018.

According to a report published by Indian business daily the Economic Times, HCIL also proposes to increase the site’s aluminium smelting capability from 20,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) to 30,000 TPA, double propane storage to 100 tonnes and increase power back-up from 4.9 MW to 37.3 MW.
The Ministry has told Honda that it must develop a green belt area to cover 33 per cent of the total land at the site and recycle all waste water.
In addition to Tapukara, HCIL has another manufacturing facility at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Their combined production capacity is close to 240,000 cars per annum.
