Honda Motor Co is recalling up to 238,000 Fit small cars and Vezel crossover models worldwide as the company continues to struggle to rectify quality issues on the Fit range.

An official at Japan's Ministry of Transport, quoted in the local media, said the recall follows reports of six fires linked to a flaw in the electricity control system and two collisions linked with a power steering fault.

Around 160,000 of the cars recalled were sold in Japan, according to local reports.

This is the sixth recall in three years affecting the Fit model – quality issues that led to the recent boardroom shake-up. The current group president, Takahiro Hachigo, told local reporters the main root cause of the quality issues in recent few years is global expansion that was too ambitious for the company to handle.

Responsibility for product planning and evaluation since has been consolidated within the company's R&D division.

Around 160,000 of the cars recalled were sold in Japan, according to local reports.
