The first Mokka was a GM Korea project but the new one is firmly part of the Groupe PSA family, employing not only the CMP and e-CMP architectures but PSA petrol, diesel and electric powertrains.

This 4.15 m long (-12.5 cm) front-wheel drive SUV will return Opel and Vauxhall to a segment they once dominated with a model of the same name. With only the Crossland X in the B-SUV class since the GM platform Mokka X was withdrawn last year, both marques’ sales have understandably suffered.

Seeking to stand out from much of the competition, the twin brands are pushing the idea of this vehicle being available as an EV from day one of sales. Customers can order a Mokka from “late summer” for delivery in early 2021. And while details of the Mokka-e have been disclosed, for the moment, the specifics of petrol and diesel engines have not.

The front end features what is termed ‘Vizor’ styling, while the interior also has a new look, the emphasis being on ‘Pure Panel’ digital screens. These are major changes for Opel and Vauxhall as the original Mokka dated to 2012.

The EV shares major components with the Peugeots e-208 and e-2008 along with the DS 3 E-Tense. That means a 50 kWh battery pack plus outputs of 100 kW (136 PS) and 260 Nm from a single motor. The top speed is limited to 150 km/h (93 mph), the maximum range is 322 km (WLTP) and there is an eight-year battery warranty. A 100 kW DC system allows an 80% charge in 30 minutes.

The Mokka and Mokka-e will be manufactured at PSA’s Poissy plant in the western suburbs of Paris, commencing in the fourth quarter.
