Grammer has developed a new free standing centre console for BMW.

The supplier claims rear passengers gain an “enormous” increase in legroom thanks to the absence of centre tunnel and a centre console that appears to be floating above the flat floor.

“Its free-standing design supports the generous spatial effect perfectly and at the same time meets the heightened safety requirements resulting from the modified connection to the vehicle floor,” said Juergen Gerl, automotive chief at the supplier.

“We have consistently designed the centre console with noise reduction in mind. This applies to moving functional parts such as lids or cupholder springs as well as to non-visible assemblies inside.” In the air ducts for heating and air conditioning, the supplier used a flow- and vibration-optimised design and suitable materials to prevent air noise.

The console includes a 12V socket, double USBs, wireless charging, stowage space and shelves and there are surface covering choices.

Lighting in the storage compartment under the armrest is activated only when the butterfly lid is opened.
