General Motors is reportedly planning to add a peer-to-peer Airbnb-style car rental service through its Maven carsharing platform.
Bloomberg reported that a pilot scheme will enable GM car owners to rent out their vehicles when they aren’t using them and the scheme could start this summer. The Maven platform would be utilised for the new service, the report said.

The report cited anonymous sources who said GM vehicle owners would split the resultant revenue earned with the automaker.
GM’s Maven unit already rents vehicles to individual drivers and Maven Gig also lends cars to drivers who want to earn income by driving for third party on-demand transport service providers such as Uber and Lyft.
The Bloomberg report notes that by launching a peer-to-peer service, Maven would get access to more vehicles without its parent having to carry more assets on its balance sheet.
Although other start-ups are involved in peer-to-peer car rental, analysts say carmakers are well placed because of their huge networks of vehicle owners.
