According to estimates from the German metal workers union, IG Metall, around 100,000 workers in the metal industry could be affected. The German press association cites some examples in the shipbuilding and aluminium industry.
The strikes have been planned to coincide with the fifrth round of pay negoations for the region of Baden-Württemberg (Stuttgart area), which houses Mercedes, Porsche and Bosch plants, amongst others.
The union is calling for 6.5% pay increase nationally for its 3.4m workers. The electric and electronic industry union, which is the other major German union representing automotive workers, is negotiating closely with IG Metall. Workers have so far offered 2.5% plus a 0.5% performance bonus.
