The European Commission is preparing further legal action against the special German law which means the state of Lower Saxony can effectively block a hostile takeover of Volkswagen through a 20% stake that it holds.

The IG Metall labour union, which represents most VW employees, fears that a new owner could endanger jobs and rights for employees .

The workers’ demonstration has been scheduled to take place on the same day as a meeting of VW’s supervisory board in Wolfsburg at which the law was due to be on the agenda.

Analysts say the demonstration is also designed to send a message to Porsche, which has had bumpy relations with VW’s workers since it acquired a higher stake in the company.
