The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand ended 2010 with a new sales record: 4.5m vehicles – up 13.9% year on year – were delivered to customers worldwide for the first time in a 12-month period.

The brand claimed “substantial growth” in key markets such as China, the US, Russia and India.

Over 1.51m vehicles, up 35.5%, were delivered in China while US sales rose 20.3% to 256,800. Russian deliveries were up 49.1% to 58,900 units while Indian deliveries were up more than 10 times to 30,300.

VW has local assembly in China, India and Russia and had expanded operations in the latter two in 2010.

Asia/Pacific region sales grew 37.6% to 1.65m, North America was up 17.6% to 406,400 and South America 2.9% to 756,500 units.

Europe sales slipped 1.2% to 1.55m in an overall market, which contracted 2.5%.
