Volkswagen delivered 923,100 passenger cars in the first two months of this year, up 3.3% from the 893,300 in the same period last year. Sales also grew in February by 1.5% to 407,600.

Sales and marketing chief Christian Klingler, said: “Even though the situation in some markets was at times difficult, the Volkswagen passenger cars brand continued to develop well with high demand in particular for the Up, Golf and Golf Estate as well as the Touran and Tiguan.”

Deliveries in western Europe (excluding Germany) rose 7.8% to 124,800, vs 115,700 in 2013. In Germany deliveries grew in the first two months to 80,600, up 4.6%. Deliveries in Russia fell to 20,000, down 11% as a result of the difficult market situation.

Asia Pacific saw sales rise 11.1% in January and February to 472,700 of which 437,700 were delivered in China, including Hong Kong. Sales in India, however, fell 34% to 6,500.

North American sales were also down 9.3% to 81,900 of which 50,600 were handed over in the US, down 16%. South America was also down, 18% to 92,100 with sales in Brazil falling 14% to 70,500.
