Volkswagen said in a statement that it owners of vehicles with a three- or four-cylinder diesel engines should have the fuel pump checked.
The company said that a defect during the manufacturing process of a specific bolt could lead to the failure of this bolt on the cover of the fuel pump and that could result in a leakage of diesel fuel.
The models to be checked are Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicles with three or four cylinder diesel engines (1.2,1.4 and 1.9 litre engines with two valves per cylinder) which were built between March and August 2004.
The company said that approximately 290,000 vehicles are affected worldwide, some 90,000 of which are registered in Germany.
