The Daily Telegraph said Hartz, the company’s human resources chief, had faced increasing pressure to resign over the past week following allegations that he had approved large payments to VW’s works council.
The cash reportedly was said to fund “pleasure trips” to exotic locations, which allegedly included the services of prostitutes.
The Daily Telegraph said Hartz, 63, has denied any wrong-doing.
He reportedly issued a personal statement in which he said it was natural for him to carry the blame for what had happened. ”VW’s reputation is at stake,” he said, according to the newspaper.
