Volkswagen’s Hannover plant will build and paint the body for the new Porsche Panamera sports car, due in 2009, according to an article in Spiegel magazine.

The car will be assembled at Porsche’s Leipzig plant.

Dpa-AFX news reported the article saying that this is the first new joint project between Volkswagen and Porsche since Porsche became a major shareholder.

The news agency failed to get the story confirmed by Porsche, which said that a decision had not yet been reached.

According to Spiegel, the Hannover plant was in competition for the contract with Volkswagen’s plant in Bratislava, and Magna Steyr in Austria. Hannover was reportedly considered more flexible and offered cost advantages.
