Volkswagen Group sold 3.05m vehicles from January to April, boosting sales 5.6% year on year, and topping the 3m mark for the first time in the first four months of a year.
April sales rose 7.2% to 784,600.

“The group and its brands made a satisfactory start to the second quarter,” sales and marketing chief Christian Klingler said. “Nevertheless, the market environment remains difficult, and is very challenging in some world regions. The economic crisis in Europe in particular is having an increasing impact on the automobile industry. However, growth continues on the markets in North America and, above all, Asia, so we are optimistic we will be able to maintain the momentum of the first three months in the second quarter.”
Group sales in Europe in the first four months dipped 3.9% to 1.21m vehicles – 635,900 (-3.9%) in western Europe (excluding Germany) and 370,200 (-4.4%) in Germany.
North America sales grew 12.9% to 279,900 of which 193,900 (+11.6%) were in the US. South America was down 1.6% to 292,000.
Asia-Pacific region volume was up 16.5% to 1.14m with China up 18.4% to 1.02m. In contrast, sales in India dropped 23.1% to to 33,400.
