The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand set a new record in 2011, delivering 5.1m vehicles worldwide, up 13.1% year on year.
A record 1.72m (+13.8%) were sold in China, US sales rose 26.3% to 324,400, boosted by the new Tennessee-built Passat, and Russia volume more than doubled to 118,000.
