Production began, seven generations back, in 1974.

The milestone car was a TDi BlueMotion and will be displayed at a plant open day on Saturday, 15 June.
The Golf is also made in Zwickau (Germany); FAW Volkswagen: Foshan, Guangdong (China); and, from early 2014, Puebla (Mexico).
