Volkswagen will increase the number of petrol models available under its Bluemotion sub-brand.
A Golf TSI Bluemotion, powered by the first turbocharged version of the company’s one litre, three cylinder EA211 engine, will soon join the Polo Bluemotion which uses a normally-aspirated version of the unit.
Until late last year with the launch of the Polo, all Bluemotion models were diesels. The Golf TSI offers a choice of manual and double clutch (DSG) automated gearboxes. In both cases, CO2 and fuel economy figures are 99g/km and 65.7mpg with emissions 20g/km lower than those of the first, 2007, diesel Golf Bluemotion.
The TSI Bluemotion delivers more power – 115bhp – than the original, 1.6 litre, Golf GTi. With 200Nm of torque on tap, VW claims it has the highest specific torque of any large scale production engine.
The automaker said it had also worked hard to improve NVH, a weakness of I3 engines. The new motor will eventually be available in the Golf Estate (wagon) and SV plus the VW Caddy light commercial line.
A second-generation Golf Bluemotion diesel is on the way, too.
