The new Volvo FM12 All-Wheel Drive has exceptional get-you-there ability both on soft, slippery surfaces and off-road, thanks to drive to all the axles in combination with a differential lock for each axle and between the tandem axles in 6×6 configuration.
The new model’s off-road abilities are further enhanced by an extra 90 mm ground clearance compared with its predecessor, the FL10/FL12 4×4 and 6×6. And for extreme off-road operation, there is a robust steel plate underneath to protect the engine.

Volvo powertrains for best power and highest braking performance
The Volvo FM AWD is only available with the FM range’s largest engine, that is to say in FM12 configuration with the D12C engine producing 340-420 hp, and in either Euro 2 or Euro 3 guise.
There is a choice gearboxes, either an all-synchromesh 12-speed unit with two extra-low non-synchromesh crawler ratios, or the automatic Volvo Powertronic PT1660 power-shift transmission, which has six ratios and a hydraulic torque converter.
Drive to the front axle takes place via a Volvo-designed transfer gear. Drive to the front axle can be disconnected when driving on the road or when the terrain does not require front-wheel drive.
Powerful wheel brakes take care of braking needs. In order to lower the burden on the wheel brakes, Volvo’s patented VEB (Volvo Engine Brake) can be fitted as an option. The automatic Volvo Powertronic transmission can be equipped with an integrated retarder which offers excellent braking performance.
The all-wheel drive version of the FM12 is primarily intended for demanding construction operations where road grip is limited, and it is also suitable for difficult timber transportation duties and for special tasks such as in the fire service.
