“We don’t want plants to be played off against one another,” a representative of the metalworkers union, IG Metall told Handelsblatt, adding that a continuation of the works councils of both companies should help guarantee jobs and plants.


A Continental spokesman said the company can give no guarantees as it does not receive guarantees from its customers that all its production capacity will be used.


The European Commission will give its decision on 15 November about whether the acquisition complies with European competition law. The planned merger will create a company with a turnover of EUR25bn euros, and 140,000 employees.
