In an interview with the German newspaper Die Zeit, PSA CEO Christian Streiff said that such an alliance is a possibility.

PSA already cooperates with BMW on small petrol engines, which are used by in the German automaker’s UK-built Mini, and with Ford on the development and manufacture of a range of diesels.

Streiff also provided his opinion of proposed future CO2 emissions limits. Commenting on German manufacturers asking for different limits for different sized cars, he said, “The governments in Europe cannot allow the rich to harm the environment more than those who are less well-off.”

He said the 120g/km average CO2 emission limit proposed by the EU should apply to all vehicle manufacturers, even if this goal is easier to reach for some than others. “One gramme of CO2 must be one gramme for all European citizens. There can be no discrimination.”

A clear division has emerged between vehicle manufacturers from Germany, which are asking for stepped emission limits according to the size of the vehicle, and the French and Italian vehicle manufacturers, which want one single limit for all.

The UK already levels annual vehicle road tax based on CO2 output and fuel type.
