General Motors Europe’s Opel and Vauxhall brands have achieved record commercial vehicle sales in Europe in the first half of the year, with 85,000 registrations, continuing a record of strong growth, which has seen sales almost double in the last five years.

Total European light truck registrations (up to 3.5 tonnes) were 160,000 units in 2005. A further 20,000 Vivaro and Combo vans were registered as passenger cars.


The registration figure for this year gives Opel/Vauxhall a market share of 5.44% in western and central Europe.


Opel said it had done particularly well in Germany will registrations up 21% to 8,011 units, giving it a market share of 5.14%, while in Italy sales were up 28% to 4,937 units (3.96% market share).


Registrations of the 2.8 tonne Vivaro were particularly strong, reaching 32,454 units in the six month period, up 11.6% on a year earlier. In Germany Vivaro registrations were up 27.3% and they were also up strongly in the UK (+14.6%) and in Italy (+63.3%).


Opel/Vauxhall is looking for a further boost to light truck sales when the Vivaro and Movano are updated later this year.
