GM’s European Opel unit has denied reports that it is considering cutting back Astra model production.

Reuters reported that it denied a cutback was planned although the report also said that the manufacturer asserted that it would not rule out such a step if demand faltered.


GM makes the Astra compact in Bochum, Germany, Ellesmere Port in Britain, and Antwerp, Belgium, and all capacity utilisation at all these plants is “satisfactory,” it said in response to a newspaper report it was considering reducing Astra output.


“The company reserves the right, however, to align production capacity with customer demand as the model’s life cycle advances,” a statement added.


However, Rainer Einenkel, head of the works council at Opel’s factory in Bochum, Germany, said the Tuesday that the carmaker was considering axing one shift at one of three plants making the Astra, AP reported.
