According to Autodata, the Taubaté plant is operating on three shifts, assembling 1,600 vehicles a day. São Bernardo do Campo could increase production if some of its facilities, such as the paint shop – which is currently at the same output level as the plant in Taubaté – are expanded.

Volkswagen do Brasil management is reportedly in negotiations with unions about which facilities will be expanded.

Hundreds of new jobs are expected to be created this year with production expanded at the three existing plants in Brazil and Argentina.

The third Brazilian plant is São José dos Pinhais, which is expected to produce 800,000 vehicles this year, and 900,000 in 2009.

In Argentina Volkswagen produces the Fox and Spacefox in Pacheco, Buenos Aires, and it has a major transmission plant in Cordoba.

Volkswagen now sells more cars in Brazil than it does in Germany, although the company’s largest single market is China.
