Volkswagen will be quick to add further models to the new Golf line-up unveiled in Berlin on Tuesday night (4 September).

A replacement for the iconic GTI will be available in April 2013 – just three months after the UK arrival of the mainstream three- and five-door models.

With the UK such an important hot hatch market it will be one of the first to get the new GTI which is likely to make its public debut at either the Detroit [the GTi is a popular version in the US] or Geneva motor shows early next year.

Further petrol and diesel engines are also in the offing, and VW has promised to add electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains to the new car which is built in such a way that it is ready to accept alternative drive systems without modification.

There will also be a version capable of running on compressed natural gas in some markets, with emissions of only 92g/km, but this is highly unlikely to come to the UK because there is no refuelling infrastructure to support it.
