On Monday, BMW Group Munich branch head Karsten Engel handed over the millionth car – a carbon black-metallic 730d Individual – to its new owner.
After a shaky start last year to worldwide sales of the redesigned 7-series, with much media criticism directed at its angular styling and complex electronic gearshift, parking brake and ‘I-drive’ control system, BMW said it delivered 46,200 examples to customers by the end of November.
“The 7 series is making an important contribution to the success of the BMW Group,” the company claimed in a statement.
BMW launched new six and eight cylinder diesel 7-series models in October this year and, with diesels taking a 40% share of the large luxury car class in Europe, is expecting the new variants to boost sales.
Petrol-powered V12 versions are also due on sale soon though the company recently said, at a press event for the new variant in Dubai, that it does not expect sales volumes of the flagship model to be high.
BMW sold over 976,000 cars to the end of November, of which 842,000 were BMW-brand models and 134,000 were UK-built Minis.
