Director of production Rainer Schmückle told auto motor und sport magazine the need to move the CLS has arisen because the automaker wants to increase E-Class production.

Contract assemblers such as Karmann or Magna Steyr (which has built four-wheel drive E-class models previously) could be used for a limited period of time. Karmann already produces the Mercedes CLK and supplies roof systems to the company and is currently laying off workers because of a shortage of contract assembly deals.

The CLS – a four-door ‘coupe’ spin-off of the current-generation E-class – was introduced in 2004 and is nearing the end of its life cycle. Mercedes sold 4,533 last year, down 20.6% on 2006.
