Mercedes sold 90,200 cars worldwide compared with 96,500 a year earlier, DaimlerChrysler spokeswoman Eva Guratzsch told Dow Jones.

The news agency said sales in Germany, with its stumbling economy, were especially weak, sinking 15% to 28,200 from 33,200 a year ago, and this dragged down western Europe by 11% to 54,400, from 61,400.

In the US however, Dow Jones said, Mercedes-Benz November sales rose 7.5% to set a new record, thanks in part to the new E-Class.

Global Mercedes car sales from January to November slipped 0.8% to 1.026 million, from 1.034 million in the same period last year. That’s still better than the global market’s 2% decline, the company said, according to Dow Jones.

Sales in Italy, Spain and France showed especially strong growth, the report said, citing Mercedes spokeswoman Guratzsch.
