New car sales in Germany reached 290,000 in May, down 4.8% on the same month last year, according to the Federal Motor Vehicle Office (KBA).
But there was some encouragement since the figure represented a climb of 5.8% on the month taking sales for the first five months of the year to 1.3m, an annual rise of 0.3%.

Volkswagen saw sales drop 7%, BMW and Mini sales were down 5%, Opel sales were down 11% and Ford saw a decrease of 8% while Audi sales rose 6%.
