Opel will now look to establish concrete talks with four German Länder following confirmation the regions will support the GM division.
The prime ministers of Hesse, Thuringia, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate met German chancellor Angela Merkel yesterday (10 June) in Berlin following the refusal by the economics ministry to issue loan guarantees totalling EUR1.3bn (US$1.6bn).
North Rhine-Westphalia prime minister Juergen Ruettgers said the regional states had agreed to open new negotiations with Opel and parent company General Motors. “There were a number of possibilities and new tools to help Opel,” he said in a statement.
“They [Länder] have said they will support us and therefore we will seek discussions with them to find out the specific situation to identify the framework under which such support could be possible,” a GM Germany spokesman told just-auto.
“We have no date – it might be a bit premature to assume such information would available.”
