Opel’s Kaiserslautern component plant has been saved from threatened closure.
According to dpa-AFX news, GM is planning to keep the plant turn it into a centre of excellence for component manufacturing, although it will cease engine production
The sale or closure of the plant is now off the cards and the plant is reportedly guaranteed safety until at least 2014. Workers groups are calling for a guarantee until 2018.
The news agency has also learned that GM will invest several million euros in its Bochum plant.
GM Europe chief, Carl-Peter Forster is expected to make a formal announcement tomorrow (Wednesday), signaling clear support for Germany as a production location.
