General Motors’ German operation Adam Opel AG has announced that it will invest over 100 million euros to modernise the press shops at its Bochum, Germany and Antwerp, Belgium production facilities over the coming months.

The company said it was establishing the technological prerequisites for processing high-quality light-weight steel to be used for future model generations.

The new, state-of-the-art press facilities will be capable of stamping larger and more complex parts and will accommodate the latest types of steel, which require higher pressing pressures. The new press lines will guarantee an extremely high quality level while at the same time reducing maintenance costs.

Meanwhile, Fiat-GM Powertrain joint venture managers confirmed plans for a flexible production facility for diesel engines at the Kaiserslautern plant, which allows for an annual output of up to 150,000 -injection powerplants.

“The decision in favour of assembling up to 150,000 direct-injection diesel engines is an important contribution to maintain the current employment level. The production facility is highly flexible and can be operated with either two or three shifts,” the managers said in a statement.
