It is looking to take a share in the FSO plant in Warsaw and building a new factory in Russia for small Chevrolet cars.
In Russia GM is reportedly in discussion with the St. Petersburg authorities to build a new plant, but officially the company will only confirm plans to contract assembly of the Chevrolet Aveo, Lacetti and Epica to Avtotor in Kaliningrad from this year.
It plans to assemble 15,000 cars this year. Avtotor already assembles Cadillac, Hummer and US Chevrolet models.
In Warsaw, GM’s Ukrainian assembly partner, AvtoZaz, took over the 300,000-unit capacity FSO-Daewoo plant at the beginning of 2006.
AvtoZaz already assembles Chevrolet cars in the Ukraine and is therefore a natural partner for GM in Poland.
