Green issues continue to dominate the agenda of the major auto manufacturers with news that General Motors is pushing to make its European line-up more eco-friendly.

According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the US giant has called the programme ecoFlex.


The company said that it would offer an ecoFlex variant of each model line, which will produce lower emissions. The push will start with the 2008 Corsa 1.3 CDTI diesel hatchback.


The car emits 119 grams per kilogram of carbon dioxide, below the proposed EU average standard of 130 grams per kilogram.


GM’s goal will be to produce the car with the same performance standards and price as conventional vehicles, AP said.


GM is also looking to expand the range of biofuel engines in its Saab range. The company was reported to be looking at offering a Cadillac model with an E85 biofuel engine by autumn 2007.
