General Motors and PSA Peugeot are to create a steering committee to lead their proposed alliance despite apparently rejecting talks with unions affected by the joint venture.

The new committee will be formed of five executives each from GM and PSA with a statement from both automakers noting: “It will have strategic administrative control of all alliance activities, including future developments.”

GM representatives will be vice president, Stephen Girsky, finance director, Daniel Amman, product development managing director, Mary Barra, global product and programmes director, Stephen Carlisle and Europe president Karl-Friedrich Stracke.

Representatives from PSA include programmes director, Jean-Christophe Quémard, financial director, Jean-Baptiste de Chatillon, research and development director, Guillaume Faury, purchasing director, Yannick Bezard and industrial director, Denis Martin.

“The nomination of the steering committee members constitutes the first significant step for the alliance and reflects the determination of both companies to really start to work together,” added the joint statement.

“Work on common projects should start before the end of the year. This alliance reinforces, but does not substitute the performance plans established by each group in Europe to restore their profitability.”

Reports have speculated workers’ representatives in all countries where both companies are present, have asked the boards of GM and Opel for discussions, but this has apparently been rejected.

GM was not immediately available for comment.
