Around 51.6% said they were using the bus and train more often and driving less, according to the website, mobile.de.
Some 96.8% of repsondents said they had taken concrete steps to reduce the fuel consumption of their vehicles. Around 75% now turn their engines off at traffic lights and around 73% said they keep engine revs low.
The survey was conducted by market research company, TNS. It found that those on lower incomes are more likely to change their habits that those on higher incomes.
