According to data from the German vehicle manufacturers trade association, Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA), German vehicle manufacturers increased their market share in the US to 6.4% in the first eight months of this year, with sales of 629,000 light vehicles (up 1% compared to a year earlier).


Asian brands saw their sales fall 3%, while US brands sold 19% fewer vehicles in August and saw their market share fall by 4%.


O the German light vehicles sold so far this year, 520,000 were in the high value passenger car segment – an increase of 3% in a market that was 2% down. This means that the German brands managed to increase their share of the US car market to over 10%. German light truck sales fell 7% in a market that was 19% down.


The US light vehicle market was down 11% overall in the first eight months.


In August itself German brands also did relatively well. The light truck market fell 15% in the month, while German brands sold just 2% fewer vehicles. The German share of the passenger car market was 10.7% in the month.
