Production will come to a standstill for several hours, according to works council head, Rainer Einenkel.

Last Tuesday around 5,000 Opel workers in Rüsselsheim protested against GM Europe’s business plans. Workers there are concerned that the Technical Development Centre (TDC) in Rüsselsheim is being considered for relocation overseas, as well as component production in Kaiserlautern.

The Bochum plant is currently in competition with four other plants to build the Astra. GM Europe is likely to close at least one other plant in Europe, and if Bochum does not win the Astra, it could close.

GM’s plant in former east Germany, in Eisenach is also likely to take part in industrial action in coming weeks, as well as plants in Hungary, Austria and Spain.
