The new Ka goes on sale there next February and will cost from EUR9,750. Dealers will begin taking orders from mid-November.

“We are expecting to sell around 22,000 units in Germany and around 120,000 across Europe,” Ford Germany head Bernhard Mattes told Automobilwoche.

The new Ka is built on the same platform as the Fiat Panda and 500. All three models are built in Poland where production is split equally between Fiat and Ford.

Mattes said that the rationale for cooperating with another manufacturer on small car production has become even more important since the start of the financial crisis.

Ford is hoping to attract new customers to the car.

“We want to appeal to price-conscious former Fiesta customers, and win new young customers who are design-oriented,” said Mattes.

“It is clear that the sub-B segment is a growth segment.”

Mattes said that Ford recognised it could lose some Fiesta customers to the Ka, but that it is better to keep these customers in the Ford family, rather than lose them to other brands.
