Volkswagen has named multiple technological developments at its 2014 Innovation Workshop symposium. Among them will be a DSG transmission with ten speeds and a 200kW (272PS) 2.0 TDI. 

The world’s first 10-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) is being demonstrated to journalists at the Ehra-Lessien test track facility near Wolfsburg this week. VW is yet to reveal which model(s) it will be fitted to, or when this will be. The Passat or next Phaeton seem the most likely candidates. VW says this transmission, which uses the DQ511 project code, can take up to 550Nm of torque. Although the gearbox was first spoken about at an event in Vienna eighteen months ago, there were few details revealed at that time.

Another innovation is what the company calls ‘stop-start 2.0’ which allows coasting with the engine off, at speeds below 7km/h.

A further development is a new version of the existing 176kW (240PS) 2.0-litre biturbo diesel four-cylinder engine. A prototype develops a claimed 200kW (272PS) thanks to a variable valve train, further optimised gas exchange cycles and what is known as an electric booster.
