Delphi claims that its new ‘smart’ heavy-duty diesel injector – E3 – is the world’s most advanced. Delphi says that the new injector, the result of a five-year development programme, uses an electronically activated nozzle control valve to allow precise shaping of injection events. The company adds that this leads to improved fuel economy, increased performance and substantially reduced emissions.
Delphi’s E3 injector introduces an additional valve in the injector body, just before the nozzle. Controlled by the engine management system, this ultra-fast device enables programmable injection events including timing and pressure. It also allows the engine management unit to change the pressure at which the nozzle opens (up to a maximum of 1,400 bar) for each injection event.

Delphi says that E3 is thought to be the first electronic unit injector to provide variable injection rates, which allows optimisation of combustion and hence increased performance (particularly low-speed torque) and an optimised balance between superior fuel economy and reduced emissions. The system allows rising rates (increasing the fuel delivery rate through the injection event) and multiple events and gives engineers the opportunity to introduce pilot, close-coupled pilot, main split and late post events in addition to the main injection event.
“With the E3, Delphi has revolutionised heavy-duty injection systems,” says David Friday, director of Delphi’s diesel heavy-duty business. “Electronic control of fuel rate gives engine designers many new opportunities to efficiently manage combustion. It is an important and giant step forward.”
An electronic unit pump version of E3, with a separate injector for cam-in-block applications, will be available around 2004. Suitable for diesel engines between 9 litres and 16 litres, both versions are designed for one million kilometres durability.
