New car registrations in Germany fell 4.7% in December compared with the same month in 2008 to 215,400, according to the country’s Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, or VDIK.

However, registrations rose 23% in 2009 over the previous year to 3.81 million, boosted by a car scrapping incentive scheme – the best result since 1992.


VDIK does not expect the upward trend to continue and predicted that new car registrations will slump this year to around 2.8m vehicles without the support of the scrappage scheme.


It added that if the economic situation stabilises, car sales could reach 2.9m.


The German Association of the Automotive Industry, or VDA, expects between 2.75m and 3m new car registrations this year.
