DaimlerChrysler has advertised for 620 unemployed to work in its Sindelfingen plant to help assemble the E-Class, according to local press reports.

The company would hire people with or without automotive experience and give them short-term contracts of up to three months.


The news confirms claims by unions last week that recent job cuts have left the company short of around 1,000 workers. Brisk E-Class demand means that DaimlerChrysler needs to increase production by around 13,000 units by the end of October, and that work rates will need to be raised during the summer holidays.


Mercedes has cut about 7,800 workers in Germany via voluntary buyout packages and early retirement since last year. According to works council chief Erich Klemm, Mercedes has known it would have short-term requirements for more workers, and that it would fill them with short-term contracts.
