Automotive supplier Continental has acquired the Germany-based radar engineering unit of Magna Electronics, an operating unit of auto parts supplier Magna International anticipated to be effective 1 July.
“By integrating Magna’s radar engineering, we can strengthen our market position in the field of radar,” said EVP passive safety & ADAS at the Continental chassis & safety division Andreas Brand.

The engineering activities at Ottobrunn near Munich, Bavaria, will continue under the control of Continental, while the deal will see eleven engineers transferred.
“We are convinced innovative technologies will allow us to one day drive a car without any accidents, in all vehicle categories and markets of this world,” said Continental president chassis & safety division Ralf Cramer.
“To us, driver assistance systems are a key technology when it comes to predictive driving safety.”
For its part, Magna Electronics says the radar engineering sale will free up resources to concentrate on development of camera-based technologies.
“Camera systems and electronic controls provide a wide range of applications to enhance safety and improve efficiency and convenience to the driver,” said Magna Powertrain and Magna Electronics president Joachim Hirsch.
No details were available concerning the purchase price.
