German car registrations were up 1.5% in October compared to a year ago, with 294,000 passenger cars sold. This brings the year-to-date total to 2.84m units, up 1%.

Diesel cars accounted for 77% of the total, according to data from the German automotive industry trade association VDA. 69% of registrations were domestic brands.


Order intakes in October 2006 were up 1%, with domestic order intakes up 2%. The VDA said this shows that buyers are not bringing forward purchases ahead of the increase in VAT from January 2007, as much as had been expected.


Export order intakes were up 5% in October, and 6% year-to-date. German manufacturers exported 321,500 cars in October, an increase of 3% over a year ago. The VDA said that exports are expected to reach record levels this year.


Production in October was down slightly (-1%) to 452,700 cars. In the first 10 months of the year 4.5m cars were produced, up 1% year on year.
