Adjusted for the number of working days, new car registrations were down 10% on the year in November, continuing a streak of weak results in recent months, VDIK said in a statement.

New car registrations, which mirror car sales, posted heavy losses of 8.2% in October and more than 10% in September and August each.

The renewed slump in new car registrations pushed year-to-date figures into negative territory for the first time this year.

In the first eleven months of the year, new car registrations in Germany were down by 1.5% compared with the same period last year, at 2.86m units.

The association said that 2008 will be the worst year since 1990.
