Bosch has won top prizes in this year’s Automechanika Innovation Awards. First place in the auto accessories category went to the Aerotwin wiper, while Bosch and Daimler-Chrysler won the autoparts category with their jointly developed SBC electro-hydraulic brake system, the world’s first brake-by-wire system, launched on the Mercedes SL.

The panel awarding the Automechanika innovation prizes, consisting of specialist journalists, representatives of associations and after-sales experts, also chose SBC for one of the three major awards.

The judging panel praised the highly distinctive joint-free Aerotwin wiper for its overall wiping quality, durability and markedly reduced noise compared to traditional wiper blades.

Aerotwin has already won this year’s PACE Award, presented since 1994 by Automotive News and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young and can be seen on vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, Renault and Ford. Bosch will also offer retrofit Aerotwin blades from the end of this year.

The SBC (Sensotronic Brake Control) electro-hydraulic brake won praise for improvements in both safety and comfort. Instead of depending on mechanical action, the driver’s braking motion is registered by sensors and transmitted electrically to the SBC control unit, which then calculates the required braking pressure for each individual wheel on the basis of these signals.

Like the Aerotwin, SBC has also picked up a previous award in the shape of the µ-medal, presented by the µ-Club, an association of international experts in the field of brake technology.
