CEO Bernd Bohr told Automotive News Europe the company has sufficient experience with powertrains and electric and battery management systems to gain a competitive lead over Japanese suppliers within the next few years.

He is convinced that Bosch can become the market leader in the sector because Japanese suppliers deliver only componentsrather than complete systems.

Bohr said Bosch has increased the number of people working on hybrid technologies to 400, up from 100 in 2004.

Bosch is developing a range of hybrid systems and will select a partner to help produce lithium-ion battery cells this year. Bohr said that it is essential to manufacture the cells in-house because this has a big impact on the total cost of the systems and their capacity. Bohr said this would also allow the supplier to offer life-long guarantees on hybrid systems.
