BMW will reportedly reduce the number of models in the MINI line-up from eight to five in the long-term to reduce cost and complexity.

But the brand will still take “new and unexpected directions,” brand chief Peter Schwarzenbauer told reporters at an event in Munich.

The remaining five models – expected to include the three and five-door hatchback, Countryman crossover and Clubman estate, will be ‘superheroes’ with their own personality and unique capabilities, Bloomberg News reported.

“It is important to find the right balance between growth on the one hand and profitability on the other,” said Schwarzenbauer who didn’t say which models would be cut or when, adding that “Mini now faces competition in areas where it previously stood alone.”
